The snapshot of a newcomer

The teacher holding the Using Operating Systems course asked the students of the first group in the series he teaches for to remain after the classes to get aquainted. I have attended this meeting, since I am a Teaching Assistant.

This was a good priviledge for gathering input on their feelings as new students. It was interesting to see the diversity of the environments students were coming from. It remembered me about my first year, when I was surprised by many of my colleagues.

Some of the students felt like expressing their ideas about the school, after only 2 weeks of studying. It was partially a shock for me to hear what they said.

Not to get into lots of details, the most expressed ideas were on the implementation of the new teaching system. As you probably don’t know, the teaching system has been revamped in .ro starting this year. Students will do 4 years instead of 5 (+other years for BSc etc.). Everything looks great until now. Older students can only imagine how is university without lots of useless subjects.

Now comes the “fun” part. Some subjects were provided less classes. Surprisingly, some teachers admitted this AND they said that, because they have less classes, they have to compress the content - do more stuff in less time. Now, where’s the improvement there?!? Students were supposed to make 4 years learning other (&less &addapted better to the specialization) stuff. Students were puzzled.

Some of them complained that they don’t have time to learn usefull subjects because of the other ones. It kind of remembered me of the 2nd university year, where we so caught up with other subjects that we had to leave behind Assembly Programming.

Well, it was sad to hear that… I really thought the system could do it right from the start. Unfortunately, there’s too much suff to be changed, starting with the mentality of some teachers…

Happy migration day

A happy migration day in my life of a Linux user.

I easily managed to upgrade my entire system from GCC 3.4.3 to GCC 4.0.2, using the wonderful ArchLinux distribution.

Steps:

  1. list self-compiled packages using a script

    #! /bin/bash
    installed=`pacman -Q | sed -e “s|\(.*[^ ]*\) .*|\1|g” `
    repos=`pacman -Sl | sed -e “s|[^ ]* \(.*[^ ]*\) .*|\1|g”`

    for pkg in $installed
    do
    found=`echo $repos | grep $pkg`
    if [ "$found" == "" ]; then
    echo $pkg
    fi
    done

  2. disable/uninstall all the packages listed above, in order for the system to remain stable after a bootup with new GCC & libraries
  3. upgraded everything with “pacman -Syu” - followed close all the changes being done in the system, mainly backuped files
  4. rerun “lilo” - new kernels got installed
  5. rebooted
  6. I could feel fresh GCC 4 air
  7. reinstalled “nvidia” - the installer has a setup which must be run after a kernel upgrade
  8. recompiled own packages previously disabled/uninstalled
  9. started X
  10. enjoyed KDE 3.4.2… an updated version compared to my previous one

Now, I’m getting ready for KDE 3.5 :)

P.S. Yep, I do enjoy being an ArchLinux user.

New school year…

Yep, today a new school year starts, for the students in .ro.

The day started great for me at 7:30am, when my mobile wake me up after ~4h of sleep and I mean this. Preparations were done in the sound of MTV Music… this was the thing that really woke me up. At 7:30am, I was alone at home as everybody left for their work early.

I had some stuff to do in the city and I got at the uni at about 10:00am, after experiencing the morning traffic in Bucharest - got to love it, I forgot how it was.

How was the athmosphere? Well, crowded, lots of new students waiting to enjoy the year… I can hear some of you, there in the back: yeah sure :p.

Some of the new students will have me as their teaching assistant at a new course, Using Operating Systems (I hope I got the translation right). The acronym is the same in .ro: USO (sounds like UFO, doesn’t it? - I hope it won’t be like this for the new students). The labs I will be teaching at are actually Linux labs.

Up until 2pm, me and my colleague teaching assistants checked the computers for tomorrow, when we will have our first classes. The more I think about it, the more I believe that we might have to explain some stuff really in-deep, as the labs try to cover a wide range of activities.

Besides this, I managed to get my schedule, after its release had been delayed up until the very last moment. Sad day for my series. A group from my series was moved out to another series as some other students were moved in (I’m in the 3rd year; these new students couldn’t get into the 4th year; their presence in our series was conditioned by the fact that they had classes with the teachers in our series and they could only pass exams with these teachers). I find the system plain wrong. Having said this, I do realize nothing will be changed soon.

Well, now I’m getting ready for tomorrow… the first true school day.

Website upgrade

Well, I managed to break my website, when I tried installing PmWiki. I find PmWiki rather interesting, because you only need to unzip the code somewhere and it just works. No need for a special setup, no need for SQL databases - pure filesystem based.

My website is rather picky when it comes to mod_rewrite rules. Removed PmWiki, upgraded Wordpress to the latest version and everything is back! I love stuff which Just works ™.

P.S. I could have a look over some plugins… some improvements wouldn’t hurt, now that I’m at it… :)

Google and Psi… and the world is rolling

I was commenting in my last blog entry about Google’s recent aquisition - a company producing a windows only closed client.

Today I woke up and what do I see in the news: Google Talk is out - the IM client from Google supports XMPP… Psi is on the supported IM clients list.

Imagine me… with a big wow on my face… I can imagine everyone else in the Jabber (XMPP) world with a similar reaction…

My flow of thoughts and actions:

  • oh…
  • new potential users…
  • Psi…
  • we need a HowTo
  • Kev tolds me Psi 0.10-test1 will be out later today
  • we need a HowTo
  • where would I put the HowTo…
  • in the not yet announced Wiki…
  • Kev says the Wiki has a go for today
  • we need to keep the icons a secret for 0.10-final
  • rearranged the Wiki Main Page
  • screenshot session started for the Google Talk HowTo
  • Google Talk HowTo Wiki page completed
  • Google Talk HowTo Wiki for Psi 0.9.3 completed
  • Everything (Psi 0.10-test1, wiki, howtos) is out.
  • People started joining Psi groupchat room…
  • for the first time in history I’ve used the scroolbar to scrool the userlist
  • tons of comments…
  • went to bed happy.

I’ve also eaten between the lines there. If it does seem like in a rush, it’s because it was a rush.
We want our users to enjoy the very best of Psi that we offer right now.
Lots of thanks to the great Psi Team who helped carrying out successfully this task.

The event was also covered in Jabber Journal #24.
